Context and Aim
The EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which entered into force in May 2024, establishes a comprehensive framework to ensure the EU’s access to a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials. Among its key provisions, the Act requires EU Member States to provide strategic data and information to the European Commission to support the monitoring of the EU’s dependency on foreign sources, including through regular stress tests of supply chain resilience.
Against this background, this online workshop brings together representatives from National Geological Surveys and the European Commission to discuss the data needs and data sources required for compliance with the CRMA. The workshop will also draw on existing examples of minerals intelligence platforms to explore how similar approaches could be developed or replicated by Member States to support CRMA compliance.
Objectives
The workshop aims to:
- Clarify the data reporting obligations for Member States under the CRMA, including timelines and formats;
- Identify existing data sources, gaps, and challenges at the national level that may affect compliance;
- Explore how stress tests to monitor EU dependency on foreign sources of critical raw materials can be designed and supported by geological survey data;
- Present a data extraction example from a minerals intelligence platform that could be replicated by Geological Surveys to support CRMA compliance.
Format and Duration
The workshop will be held online as a closed event, accessible to invited and registered participants only. The session will last approximately two hours (12:00–14:00 CET) and will combine short thematic presentations with a moderated question and answer session to encourage exchange between participants. The platform to be used will be confirmed with the registration details.
Target Group
The workshop is aimed at staff from National Geological Surveys and Mining Directorates across EU Member States responsible for data collection, reporting, and supply monitoring in the context of critical raw materials, as well as representatives from the European Commission with responsibilities related to CRMA implementation and monitoring.
Programme
The workshop will be structured as follows:
