SUMMARY:Quarries Alive
DESCRIPTION:Quarry exploitation is an activity with global expression that due to its extractive nature has strong impacts on habitats\, fauna\, and flora in both quarrying and surrounding areas. Growing awareness on this issue has engaged both industrial and scientific communities to pair up and commit to ecological goals\, aiming to restore biodiversity\, safeguard natural values\, and ecosystem services. This has urged a demand for concrete and realistic solutions that move towards sustainable exploitation of resources in the extracting industry.

SUMMARY:MIN-GUIDE Annual Conference “An Innovation-Friendly Policy Framework along the Mineral Production Value Chain”
DESCRIPTION:The MIN-GUIDE Annual Conference 2017\, entitled “An Innovation-Friendly Policy Framework along the Mineral Production Value Chain”\, will be held in Brussels\, Belgium on 13-14 December 2017 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Brussels. This year’s MIN-GUIDE Annual Conference will provide insights into the cornerstones and future trends of an innovation-friendly policy framework for exploration and extraction\, processing\, waste management\, and mine closure. \nThe Annual Conference will host up to 200 participants from all over Europe\, in order to exchange knowledge and experiences on the Innovation-Policy Nexus – the relationship of good practice innovation cases and their underlying policy frameworks. In addition to high‐level keynote presentations and interactive sessions\, the MIN‐GUIDE online Minerals Policy Guide will be presented. Moreover\, the Annual Conference will provide a platform for networking and community building\, allowing participants to make use of an informal meeting space to exchange with peers and stakeholders from related areas and communities. \nIn the interactive part\, the Conference will comprise four parallel working group sessions\, introducing participants to good practice cases along the mineral production value chain: \n\nExploration and extraction (incl. Deep-Sea Mining)\,\nMineral and Metallurgical processing\,\nWaste management and mine closure.\n\nThe “Innovation Island” format of these parallel sessions will allow participants to learn and exchange hands on about the innovation cases’ success criteria\, supportive policy framework factors\, and cross-value chain interactions. \nThe Conference will provide participants with: \n\nIn-depth understanding of the Innovation-Policy Nexus: Keynote presentations and interactive sessions will offer participants an in-depth understanding of value chain innovations and what role policy can play in innovation. This will include presentations and innovation island formats on industry good practice innovations\, their supporting policy frameworks and cross-value chain interactions.\nA platform for networking and community building: Participants will have plenty of opportunities to interact\, network\, and exchange with one another via different formats\, such as innovation islands or a networking dinner. This will set the basis for integrating the mineral production debates on multiple levels\, in different policy settings\, among diverse stakeholder groups\, and among existing initiatives.\nSynthesised and easily accessible MIN-GUIDE results: The conference will showcase the Online Minerals Policy Guide\, which comprises results of three MIN-GUIDE Policy Laboratory workshops. This will enable future minerals policy experts and decision-makers to easily access and further develop a comprehensive\, customizable\, up-to-date online knowledge repository on EU MS minerals policy frameworks and good practice innovation.

SUMMARY:Dubrovnik International ESEE Mining School - Zero waste management
DESCRIPTION:The Dubrovnik International ESEE Mining School brings together international experts in the field of raw materials in the heart of the ESEE Region. Within the thematic workshops and project work the focus lies on direct knowledge transfer from renowned experts to the participants\, but also the creation of an open dialogue between graduate students\, scholars\, researchers\, the industry and the wider society. Focussing on recent developments within the mining industry and the development of the mining sector\, our program aims at transferring newfound\, innovative theoretical knowledge\, tested in practice\, to our participants.\nThe knowledge and skills gained at DIM aim at increasing the employability of mining engineers. Furthermore\, wider general education on topics of mining and processing\, and especially the improvement of mining techniques\, resulting in a lower environmental impact\, help gain wider societal acceptance of raw material extraction and processing. Our program\, in the long run\, will lead to an increase in sustainable mining and processing activities\, which will in the process result in economic growth and the creation of employment in the respective countries.\nThis is a lifelong learning project that will be implemented in close partnership with industry stakeholders in all project consortium countries. During the four years of project implementation\, the following key topics will be analysed:
